A Crux and a Little Bit of Riding.

Alright, so I have spent the last year and change aboard a Specialized Crux Frameset that I built up. While the picture above is not of my current bike, it may be my future bike, minus the WC stripes and Zipp wheels. Mine will continue to have my Easton tubulars and I'm not a World Champion, so I can't really rock the stripes.

I can't rave enough about the bike. It's stiff, rides smooth, and handles with precision, but above all else has NO BRAKE CHATTER. One things that drives me nuts about cantilever brakes is the brake chatter. My Crux utilizes the brake hanger from a Tricross that lowers the cable hanger to above the brake, and not near headset spacers as a lot of bikes. I have noticed that a lot of other companies are starting to use this on their CX bikes.

This past CX season was a total waste. After getting smashed at the USGP in Madison, WI I didn't race again the rest of the season. Which sucks and is ok at the same point. I really wanted to race this year, but at the same time I was really burned out on bikes and was not really enjoying riding all that much.
Well that has certainly changed since I moved to California. I have rediscovered my love for the bike and am riding about 6 days a week. I usually take Monday or Tuesday off and ride the rest of the week. I'm not putting in a ton of time right now, less than 10 hours a week, but I am building up and am looking to move a little further away from work so I can do the triple ride; ride to work, ride at lunch, ride home. That was come next CX season I can have a go at the great series of races that we have out here, and hopefully get in a little travel to race back in the Midwest somewhere.

To be honest, I haven't ridden that much over the last few years, and I have paid for it. I have gained weight and lost speed. Now is the time to lose weight and gain speed. I feel myself getting stronger every singe ride, but above all else I am having fun. I honestly think I needed the change of scenery, and to be surrounded by people that love to ride. Don't get me wrong, at The Bike Way we were really starting to get something special going as I was lining up to leave. I really miss the Monday night rides with the crew, but hopefully when I am back in June I can go out on a ride with everyone and show them that I got faster. hehe.

I have lived my entire life in the midwest and while it will always be my where I am from, it did not always feel like home. My family is all over the US, and we have been pretty far apart since we all moved our separate ways once we graduated high school. Moving to California was a great opportunity for my career, but also to start building a life with Ashely. I feel like I am home now, although it isn't complete until June when Ashley moves out here. Then it will be home. For those of you that do now know, I asked Ashley to marry me over the winter holiday and she said, 'Yes.'

Now on to another topic. Strava. Does anyone use it? I love it and have quickly become addicted to trying to get faster around here. That is pretty hard since I am surrounded by world class riders, current pro's and former pro's. Strava is a great web-based service that you can download your GPS ride data and see where you rank among your friends. It's free and simply awesome. It allows me to see who is riding back in Nebraska, but allows me to see who has been riding out here in California. If you don't have a Garmin, don't worry because there is an app for Iphone, and I believe one for Android.

Well I have a ton of stuff in my head, so I will try and spread it out a little and do some more posts in the coming days. I hope you enjoyed this post, and I will see you around.

Part 2: The Adventure Continues

All right, so here we go again.

California is definetly different than Nebraska. First, it isn't as cold. Weather here so far has been pretty good. There has been a couple of rainy days, and there is a rainy season, but I don't have to deal with the snow anymore. That being said there is no thunderstorms in Northern California. That is something that I miss. The earth doesn't readjust herself every day, earthquakes, nor have I felt one out here yet. I'll let you know when I do. I've been living in Morgan Hill, CA since day one out here and it is pretty nice. MoHill is a quiet town about 15 minutes south of San Jose. There have bike lanes, are pretty accepting of cyclists in general, but that is probably because Specialized is located ehre in town and they are pretty used to seeing us out on the road.

Working for Specialized is great. I am happy to go to work everyday, and I have rediscovered my passion for riding bikes again. This summer took a big toll on me and my riding. We were so busy at the shop, which was awesome, that I really didn't get to take time and enjoy riding my bike or train for cyclocross. I was pretty burned out to say the least. The riding here is great. There is tons of varied terrain for you to ride. Whether it be the willow loop which has a good climb and a super fun descent, or riding in Henry Coe park, which has some super long cat 3 and 4 climbs. No it isn't Colorado where you can climb for hours at a time, but you also don't have to deal with the altitude. Besides, if you really want to pack your day full, you can do a road ride in the early morning, drive the hour to Santa Cruz and go surfing. You definitely can't get that in Nebraska.

One last thing before I sign off for the evening. Long distance relationships take a lot of work, but if you are both committed, it can and will work.

To answer a few questions:

Yes the lunch ride is CRAZY FAST! People out here are on another level of riding talent and skill. The people I work with are fast, smooth, super fast, and some of the best riders I have ever seen. If you come out for a visit and want to do the lunch ride, be prepared to get your butt kicked up and down, side to side, and back again.

Working for Specialized is AWESOME! There is some pretty cool things going on around the office everyday. From people bringing their dogs to work, bagel Friday's, lunch rides, and so much more. The people that work here are truly the best in their field and I couldn't ask for a better group of people to work alongside everyday.

So let's catch up, shall we?

As most of you know, I don't live in Omaha, NE anymore. Towards the end of end of September I flew out to California to interview for a job at Specialized Bicycle Components. Needless to say, I was extraordinarily nervous about the interview and the job overall. It would mean I would have to leave Omaha, and Ashley. Well obviously things went well and on October 10, 2011, I started my new job as an Inside Sales Representative at Specialized. I was pretty pumped at the opportunity to do something different in the cycling industry and to continue my career in the industry that has given me so much and I think that I think I can still impact in a positive manner.

I have spent the last 2 years at The Bike Way in Omaha, NE and during that time I made some wonderful friends. It wasn't always easy there, but we were always family, and we always came back together in the end. I miss everyone there everyday, but it was ultimately time for me to move on.

To Trevin, Tara, The Seng Six, Nate, Sean, Jon, Bruce, Danny, Matt G., and all my race team compatriots; I miss you all and will see you again in June when I come back to Omaha for a visit. You are truly some of the best people I have ever known or worked with. I am proud to consider you my friends.

On October 7th, I loaded up the GTI, said goodbye to the amazing and lovely Ashley, and headed out on I-80 for the next 1700+ miles. I have done a few trips by myelf, but never going farther than Denver. So this time I blew way past that. I spent 26 hours in the car. I drove through Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and Finally most of the across California. The scenery in certain parts of the country is amazing, and some parts are completely desolate and seemingly without life for upwards of 100 to 200 miles. Spending that long in a car can get pretty mind-numbing. I don't think I could make that drive again, at least not alone.

That's enough for tonight. Coming up in Part 2 I will talk about California, rediscovering my love for riding my bike again, and the wonderful South African's.

Question: Want a chain that works?

Answer: KMC X10SL (In gold of course)

I have used the KMC X10SL chain for 2 seasons now and will not be going back to chains from Shimano or SRAM anytime soon. This chain just plains works. It is quiet, extremely light, and coolest of all available in Pink or Gold. My first experience was early last year, when we started sell them at The Bike Way as a signature of custom bikes we were building or just to add a little bling to someone's bike. So I put one on my road bike and never looked back. First ride was great because it was quieter than the Shimano Dura-Ace chain I took off, but I also noticed that it shifted great.
The chain has hollow pins, hollow outer plates, and hollow inner plates to keep the weight down. Weight for the chain uncut is around 240 grams, which is about 15 grams lighter compared to the SRAM 1091R chain. KMC also includes a quick-link for your installation pleasure. They also make a 9 speed version that works just as good.
The part that really makes this chain so good is that it lasts, in part due to the titanium-nitride coating that is used on the chain, which helps improve its slickness, and enhances that gold hue on the chain. I used 1 chain last year for commuting, cross practices, and cross races. I had a good 2500 miles on the chain before I changed it, and it wasn't even stretched to the normal replacement range yet. Normally I go through a chain about every 1000-1200 miles before it is shot. The 10 speed chain retails for around $80, but you get what you pay for on this one folks. This chain lasts and looks great. A great upgrade for any drivetrain.

Specialized Romin Pro Saddle

I started running the Specialized Romin saddle from Specialized last year, and I instantly fell in love when I rode it for the first time. Gone was the numbness, the tingling, the soreness. In came a great saddle, with a superb design, and ultimate comfort.
The BG Saddle program from Specialized works, and it works well. Their standards and R&D are second to none. I was lucky enough to meet Roger Minkow, the father of using blood flow analysis in bicycle saddles, in February at Specialized, and I was also allowed to see the blood flow testing that Specialized uses on all their Male BG saddles. It really spoke volumes to me that the test subject maintained 74% off his normal blood flow on the Romin, and had 0% on a competitors saddle. I was sold before, but it was further solidified when I was able to see the marketing become reality and realized that it wasn't a bunch of hype, but actual science.
This year I got on the *NEW* Romin Pro. The Romin Pro differs from the Comp and Expert with the addition of FACT carbon rails. It retails for $160, not too shabby for a carbon railed saddle. Most saddles in this category retail for over $200 and don't have the science to back up their claims about comfort or fitting people. The Romin Comp has hollow chromoly rails and retails for $85, while the Romin Expert has hollow titanium rails and is sold for $110.
Now, I know that not all saddles fit all people. Specialized has come up with a solution. In addition to having a variety of saddles to pick from, each one comes in 3 different widths; 130, 143, and 155. Before you buy a Specialized saddle, I would recommend that you have your sit bones measured with the BG saddle sizer. I know there are other companies doing different width saddles, and all have their own marketing and research behind them, but the Specialized BG saddles.
All Specialized saddles have a 30 day guarantee. Specialized has saddles for everyone, so give one a try and you will not be disappointed.

Busy life. I am trying to ride more and I have a very high motivation for cyclo-cross season since I have upgraded to a 3 and need to get faster.....way faster. Went on the Monday night road ride from The Bike Way last week and it turned into a 2 hour solo ride since I couldn't keep up. It was a good wake-up call for where I need to be and where I currently am at. It's not that far, but I need to get better and get the miles in.

cyclocross part 2

We are 2 weeks into cyclocross practices with the first races about a month away. Out of those 2 practices, I have been to just one. We had a really sick dog this week, and when I say 'sick', I mean really sick. Anyway she is all better now and back to her old self. I am looking forward to practice this week.

Cyclocross is really the only aspect of cycling that I still enjoy purely for its attributes and beauty. Road is convoluted by commuting and I don't have the drive to race on the road anymore. I don't own a mountain bike, so I don't ride that as much as I would like to. Hopefully that changes next year. I am not a pro, nor ride with great grace, but I love it nontheless. I need work on my remounts and tight corners, but I enjoy every second I am on my bike at practice or racing. I don't win, but I don't really care. I just want to enjoy the most beautiful aspect of cycling....cyclocross. Bring on the pain.

Cancellara Conquers the Cobbles

Fabian Cancellara entered cycling's pantheon with a dramatic victory in Sunday's 2010 Paris-Roubaix.

"Spartacus" decisively powered away from an elite group of eight riders with 50km to go, becoming just the 10th man to win Tour of Flanders and Roubaix in the same season.

Just a week after winning Flanders on his S-Works Tarmac, Cancellara hopped aboard a Specialized Roubaix and dropped arch-rival Tom Boonen ahead of the Mons-en-Pévèle cobblestone sector. Cancellara was briefly joined by three breakaway riders, then simply soloed all the way home against a strong headwind to the Roubaix velodrome to win by a two-minute margin.

"I think it was my big motivation today (to match the record). I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but things went perfect, the team was great," Cancellara said. "It's been an amazing week. I need some time to realize what I have really accomplished. Cycling has a long, long history. To be #10 (to win The Double), and the way I won it, I am really proud."

Thor Hushovd crossed the line second and Juan Antonio Flecha was third, but the outcome was pretty well determined as soon as Cancellara took the race by the scruff of its neck.

The victory saw Cancellara at his finest. His Saxo Bank teammates protected him all the way through the decisive Arenberg cobblestone section where the real battle commenced.

Strong northerly winds seemed to muzzle any daring, long-distance attacks and a fairly large group came out of the Arenberg.

Three riders – Bjorn Leukemans, Sebastién Hinault and Leif Hoste – had pulled clear of a lead group of about 20 riders. Cancellara decided he didn't want to wait for others to make the race and punched accelerator on the pavement just ahead of the Mons-en-Pévèle with 48km to go.

"Everyone was talking Cancellara against Boonen. They told me, don't race his race, race your race," Fabian said. "That really helped. I decided I wanted to make the group smaller, and then no one could follow me. I kept going full gas, and then I knew the race was only for second place."

Saxo Bank was superb throughout the day. Kasper Klostergaard snuck into the day's main, 19-man breakaway. The team then controlled the middle part of the race, with Matti Breschel, Stuart O'Grady, Gustav Larsson, Dominic Klemme, and Frank Hoj working the nose of the main pack.

When Cancellara attacked, he didn't need teammates anymore.

"Fabian is the most amazing rider I've ever worked with," said Saxo Bank team manager Bjarne Riis. "The team rode fantastically, just like they did last weekend. But Fabian is such a special rider, he can do things like that by himself."

Riis thinks Cancellara is on such good form that he should ride Amstel Gold Race and Liège-Bastogne-Liège later this month.

Cancellara wants nothing of that, at least not right now.

"The only thing I want to do right now is have a party with my teammates," he said. "I want to enjoy this moment, if even for a few days."

After his spectacular victory, he certainly deserves it.

Paris-Roubaix a testing ground for upcoming S-Works Roubaix SL3

Saxo Bank team sponsor Specialized has provided a few of its riders with its latest 'Project Black' machine for this Sunday's Paris-Roubaix. Based on prior experience with an earlier Project Black bike it first tested under Tom Boonen that eventually became the S-Works Roubaix SL2, this new rig is almost certainly a thinly veiled preview of an upcoming S-Works Roubaix SL3.

Overall design cues are fairly similar with a giant down tube, a slightly smaller and notably bowed top tube, a tapered 1 1/8"-to-1 3/8" front end, and enormous chain stays matched to dramatically smaller seat stays, all damped by Specialized's trademark Zertz elastomeric inserts in the seat stays and fork blades. As compared to the current Roubaix SL2, though, this new SL3 takes most of those concepts and pushes them even further.

First off, the Zertz inserts are now significantly larger than before at both ends and are now secured with a metallic plate bolted in from the backside (though it's possible that plate is just cosmetic). In addition, the SL3 seat stays are spindlier than before though when viewed from behind, they now follow a straighter path from the seat cluster to the dropouts. That likely will stiffen up the rear end laterally but based on Specialized's usual design directions, we still expect the new SL3 to offer even greater vibration damping capabilities relative to the SL2 for a smoother ride, too.

Down tube, top tube and chain stay dimensions are still comparatively huge on the SL3 but with slight tweaks. The top tube is now more evenly bowed from end to end (as compared to the SL2's sudden kink at the head tube) and both the down tube and chain stays attach further down on the bottom bracket shell. Down tube height looks to have actually decreased a tad down there as well and the transition to the chain stays is much smoother and cleaner looking than before.

The seat tube has clearly received some attention, too, being more squared off toward the bottom and taking a noticeably more asymmetrical shape than before. Unlike on the SL2, the outer diameter also bulges out a bit as it joins the top tube and chain stay – suggesting perhaps a new joint method.

Dropouts are again aluminum at both ends with the rear likely using the same trick hollow construction as on the Tarmac SL3. In a first for Specialized on the road (if not, please feel free to let us know!), cable routing is fully internal for both derailleurs and the rear brake with the exception of a short exposed section at the bottom bracket guide – likely for ease of maintenance and setup. In addition to offering a cleaner look, the bolt-on entry and exit ports will almost certainly be made compatible with Shimano's Dura-Ace Di2 group for a nicely integrated package.

Unfortunately, Specialized director of research and development Chris D'Alusio was very tight-lipped about the new Project Black frameset, refusing to quote any weight or stiffness figures or even confirm or deny our observations. As of right now, he said there are no firm plans for production, either, but we're betting something very similar to this will be debuted as a 2011 model.

Meet Romin

No, it is not Roman Craig, the smarmy Uncle from The Great Outdoors, which is a great movie and one of the best roles Dan Aykroyd has ever played.

It is actually Specialized new saddle for 2010, the Romin. I have used a variety of saddles over the past few years; some winners and some losers. This one is a big winner, and today became my saddle of choice for road this season. In the past 2 years I have used a variety of saddles including(in no particular order); Fizik Arione, Fizik Aliante, Fizik Antares, Bontrager RL Inform, Selle San Marco Concor Light, Selle San Marco Regal, and now I have moved on to the Romin.

Specialized Body Geometry(BG) saddles are designed with pressure mapping and blood flow tests to make sure they are maintaining a minimum amount of normal blood flow. Click Here for a link telling you about their BG saddles.

The Romin and SL version are designed for the rider that spends time in the drops on a road bike, and wants to be comfortable while doing so. The channel/cutout is extended to the tip of the saddle for better hip rotation as well as an overall better fit on a bike.

First impressions of this saddle were mixed. One quick look and you want to say it is 'too thin' or 'too hard,' but ultimately it is comfortable when you sit on it with a pair of bike shorts. So with that, I went into Sunday's ride with an open mind. Literally, 5 minutes into the ride I was hooked. The saddle just felt good from the word 'GO'. Once I put some power to the pedals, and motored down the road the saddle felt great. I ended up doing about 40 miles on it with a lot of climbing and some flats on my way out to Fort Calhoun and back. I had no numb feelings over the course of my entire ride, which is not something I can say about any saddle I have ever ridden. It truly is a revolutionary saddle that can certainly make any bike ride more enjoyable. This will be gracing all my bikes soon, it really is a wonderful saddle that is the best I have ever ridden.

My point of view:

I met him in September at the USGP in Wisconsin and he was super nice and seemed genuinly excited to be in the US racing cross. Now with the announcement of World's being in Louisville, KY in 2013 that will bring another Belgian in his last year to the US, Sven Nys. I am a Vervecken and Nys fan so I'm super excited to see world's happen. I am sad to see Vervecken walk away, but there are stars in waiting and cross has a bright future. The following is the cycling news article and he is walking away at the right time and for the right reasons.

Three-time world champ concludes 16-year pro career

The international cyclo-cross scene is about to have a part of its heart ripped out when three-time world champion Erwin Vervecken (Baboco-Revor) hangs up the bike at the end of this season. As he has been - and still is - one of the key antagonists in the cyclo-cross scene for over 15 years, not only will the face of the sport change but Vervecken's personal journey and that of his family, friends and fans will undergo a major adjustment.

For a guy who is still at the top of his career, placing fourth and sixth in the last two World Cups, ranked top 10 in UCI, GVA Trofee, Superprestige and World Cup overall, and again qualifying for the world championships, it seems strange he would want to call it quits. But for him, the decision has nothing to do with his current results.

"After Hoogerheide [World Cup last weekend where he placed sixth], I was thinking I am still good enough to go for another year," Vervecken told Cyclingnews. "But I think it is better to stop at a good moment instead of when you're really into 15th or 20th position in the races.

"And in Belgium it's very hard to make the selection for World Cups and for the world championships. Next year there will be Tom Meeusen [upgrading from U-23]. And if [Czech champion Zdenek] Stybar becomes world champion we can only have eight riders [one less than usual] so it's going to be more and more difficult. If you don't make the selection for World Cups then it's a free fall as a rider so you better stop.

"Also, if I continue another year I will be 39 when I stop. I don't want to be the grandfather of cyclo-cross."

His family is a determining factor as well. "I have twins of three and a half years old and a boy of one and a half years old. I really look forward to having a family life in summer, and free weekends in the winter."

Transition from cyclist to "working man"

Even though he is stepping off the bike, he will remain in the 'cross scene as an event organizer for Golazo Sports which handles the GVA Trofee and other major races like Tervuren and Niel. "As a former accountant and pro bike racer, it's really a big challenge for me," said Vervecken. But after a bit of thought, he confessed that being on location may prove to be the toughest part of his job. "I like to ride my bike but I am addicted to competing. That is what I am going to miss most. Especially when you have really muddy races with lots of running, I'll think - hey, if I were good I could still finish top five or at least top 10."

As for his future relationship with the bike, Vervecken said, "I don't think I'm going to be on it for the first month. But in the summer when the weather is okay, maybe I will go for some short rides with my friends. When I hear from other riders who have retired, they say that in the beginning you'll feel like you've had enough of the bike and just want to do other things like stay up late and drink some alcohol. Then after a half a year - a year, you get bigger and then you think - it's also wonderful to be a cyclist and to focus on your body and your condition. So you start training a little bit again. I also have a treadmill at home so next winter I think I will be running two times a week or so - If I am motivated for that...but I think I will."

While Vervecken makes the life-altering transition from bike racer to "working man", he admits that his wife Liesbeth actually gives it more thought than he does. At the moment, he is home more than the average dad. Once he starts his new job all that will change, rattling their home life considerably. He acknowledges it will also be a big adjustment for his parents and mechanics who have been there for him for over 20 years.

Significantly affected as well are Vervecken's numerous fans, many of whom are presently engaged in discussions on how to move forward. "Some of them will stop going to the races," Vervecken said. "Others are looking for another guy to support. I hear some will be a fan of Niels Albert, others are going with Kevin Pauwels."

Filled with gratitude, Vervecken said, "I've had really consistent fans who always stayed with me even in years that didn't go so well. I am very happy to have had them. They also became friends - one big group of friends."

Looking back at his career, Vervecken reflects on his most memorable accomplishments. On the top of his list are his world championship performances. He has been selected every year to participate in this race since 1989. Since turning pro in 1995, he has earned three world titles (2001 in Tabor, Czech Republic; 2006 in Zeddam, Netherlands; 2007 in Hooglede-Gits, Belgium) and landed on the podium an additional five times. The rest of his results at this event were mainly top six.

Second on his list is his overall consistency at a high level. "A lot of riders had a period of a maximum three or four years at the top, but for 16 years I have been in the top 10 of UCI classification. And I have never been out of it. The only other rider so far to accomplish this feat is Sven Nys."

Heading into his last season of racing, Vervecken set a few goals for himself. One was to be ranked in the top 10 classification in the UCI, World Cup, GVA Trofee and Superprestige. Another was to make the selection for all World Cups and the world championships. And his last was to be on the podium in one major race.

The only one he's not accomplished is the last, but Vervecken optimistically reminded Cyclingnews, "The season is not over yet."

Regarding his last world championship this weekend in Tabor, Vervecken holds the same positive stance, "It is not so important as five years ago when I was a favorite, but I still want to have a good result. The last two weeks were very good so I hope to be somewhere top five. If I could make it fourth and sixth in the last two World Cups, then why not."

The final race of his career will not be a high caliber event typical for famous retiring cyclists but rather a grassroots race he organized himself - with help from Golazo. It is called "Erwin Bolt Uit" to be held on February 27 in his hometown of Herentals. There will be a kids' tour, as well as a 20km and 40km race.

What makes this event unique is that it's an all-inclusive event with a mass start. "I got the idea from a beach race I did a while back. Everyone is together with me at the start line from 12 to 80 years old, license, no license, women, men, mountain bike, 'cross bike, or even road bike. I expect 90 percent will ride it for fun, and for maybe 10 percent it will be a race."

Adding to the competition are Sven Nys, Niels Albert, Bart Wellens, and Zdenek Stybar who will join Vervecken for the full 40km length (two laps of 20km). A few amateur level racers have already told Vervecken they hope to give him a run for his money, if but only for the first few kilometres. In response to these challenges, Vervecken said, "Yeah, they can try. It's a big difference but they can always try."

After the race, there will be a bike-hanging ceremony like no other. "It is an official moment with interviews, videos, images from my world titles. Then afterwards there is a big party. That is why it's on Saturday. Otherwise people all go home at 8 o'clock because they have to go to work on Monday," said Vervecken.

When asked if the partygoers can expect tears to be shed from the big guy, Vervecken said, "I have never been emotional about a race - good or bad. I'm really not such a sensitive guy that way. But maybe during the ceremony...maybe, I don't know."

Got a new helmet today. Specialzied S-Works...Thanks Conrad. WAY better than my 3 year old Atmos that decided to develop a crack in the mold even though I never crashed it. Oh well. I also have some Specialized BG Pro MTB shoes on the way. I hope they get here before I leave for Vegas or at least before Cyclocross season starts.

Heading out to Vegas for Interbike on the 21st. Then coming back to do the first round of the USGP on the 26th and 27th. Oh yeah my shop is hosting the sign in party for the USGP. All the big pro's are coming as well as Vervecken(3x world 'cross champion) will be in attendance. Pics will be posted as soon as I get back.

I have a new team that I'm riding for. Check out their link. It is the HUDZ-Subaru cyclocross team out of Boulder. Should be fun. They have a good thing going and are really trying to get new people into the sport. I'm excited.

I've been trying to keep this updated, not that anyone still reads it, but whatever. We have all moved on to Facebook or Twitter, with myspace bringing up the rear.

Cross is coming, but training isn't. Since February I have been a LAZY ASS. I haven't done all that much riding, and especially training. I ride to work about 3-4 times a week, but it isn't enough. I've put on weight...not happy about that one. I had an epiphany the other day that is requiring me to get my ass in gear. I was riding with a coworker on one of the cross courses for this year and I got worked over not even trying hard. I'm going to race a full calendar, but I don't expect to be competitive until the end of the season, and I'm ok with that. I registered for the USGP races #1 and #2 for Sun Prairie. We'll see how that turns out.

I'm working in a shop again, and I like most of it. There are always parts of jobs that you don't like, and you just have to deal with. I'm planning on going back to school in the spring for another degree(marketing or accounting) not sure on which yet. I want marketing, but accounting makes more sense with a marketing minor. Either way I'll be back in school and trying to find a career path that suits me. Whether that is the bike industry or something else I'm really not sure. We'll just have to see where the path leads.

The Planet Bike Cup

The Planet Bike Cup - September 26th and 27th, 2009

New to the USGP in 2009, The Planet Bike Cup kicks off the Series in style on September 26th and 27th at one of the most popular venues of the Wisconsin Cycling Association Series: Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Sun Prairie is located 15 miles from downtown Madison, Wisconsin. Cyclocross races have been held at Angell Park Speedway since 2003 and this year the venue will get the USGP treatment - the course is challenging and features terrain change, off-camber technical riding and some short sharp climbs. It's also a perfect venue for a good time - offering great spectating, yummy yummy food and beers served right off the back of a golf cart!

Please note: there will be a $3 per car parking charge in effect each day.

Weekend Schedule

Friday, September 25th:

The course will be open from 2pm-4pm for pre-riding. Please do NOT ride the course outside of these hours.

4pm: Clif Bar Kids Clinic - FREE for juniors aged 10-16. Come ride with the Clif Bar athletes and learn the basics of cross, mounts, dismounts, bike handling. A great chance to review the course before trying the races on the weekend!

6pm: Registration opens. Stay tuned for details about Number Presentation Ceremonies and location! Fun for all!

Saturday, September 26th and Sunday, September 27th:

Racing begins at 8am for amateur categories. Pro Women race at 1:45pm and the Pro Men go at 3pm.

So, it's been a little over a year since I moved to Wisconsin. A lot has happened, and a ton of stuff has changed. I moved here to take a job, don't have that anymore, but in reality I couldn't be happier. I love working at Williamson. I actually feel accepted from everyone, which is something that I was missing in the some of the previous places that I worked. While some would view it as a step back, I finally realized that it is actually a step forward. I have learned so much about a company that I once idealized that it makes me a little upset that I put them on a pedestal only to be treated like I was. I have moved on and am certainly enjoying my time at the new shop. I like having the options of what to sell. CDALE, Scott, GT, Indy Fab, Lynsky, Calfee, Capo Forma, Mavic. It is great and I am learning a lot and getting ready for the next progression in my life. I know I will spend another year in Wisconsin, but after that I don't really know. I don't think that my future lies living in the land o' cheese, even though everyone is so nice, but I guess you never know. I'll add to this a little more, but I have to get out the door to work.

The mixed martial arts community lost one of its biggest personalities early Wednesday morning in a car crash in Costa Mesa, Calif.

Charles "Mask" Lewis, the 45-year-old co-founder of the TapouT apparel company, died when he lost control of his Ferrari and hit a lamp pole. Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement on its Web site, TapouT said, "It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we must regretfully confirm the passing of our beloved friend, brother and co-founder Charles 'Mask' Lewis following a car accident that occurred last night. ... Many thanks to all for the outpouring of blessings and well-wishes during this incredibly difficult time."

The Los Angeles Times reported that a Newport Beach Police Department officer witnessed the crash and saw Lewis' red Ferrari and a white Porsche spinning out of control just before 1 a.m. Wednesday. The Ferrari then hit the curb and collided into a pole.

"It was terrible," Newport Beach Lt. Craig Fox told the Times. "It was extensive damage to the vehicle."

A woman in the Ferrari was ejected from the vehicle and was in stable condition at a local hospital. Police haven't determined if she was the driver or passenger of the Ferrari, according to the Times.

Police later arrested the driver of the Porsche, Jeffrey David Kirby, and charged him with gross vehicular manslaughter. He was being held on $1 million bail.

There was a 50-mph limit on the road, but police believe both cars were traveling well above that limit, according to a report on KTLA.com. The Web site also reported that Lewis' car appeared to be a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, which can reach a top speed of 205 mph and carries a price tag around $300,000.

Lewis and Dan "Punkass" Caldwell founded TapouT in 1997 as a clothing and MMA gear retailer. In addition to retail, the private company also signed deals with fighters, including Kimbo Slice, and is a sponsor of fight events.

So as some of you know, but the same thing that happened to Bryan yesterday, happened to me about a month ago. It sucks to lose something you love, but I rebounded as hopefully everyone will that is put in that situation. I'm actually back in the shop, and I'm really happy right now. It doesn't feel like a step back, but more like a side step. I get to do what I love, but I get to have more of a direct impact on my community. After about 2 weeks of pissing around and binge eating I forced myself to snap out of my funk and a good thing happened. Williamson Bicycle Center brought me on as a sales person and is giving me a chance to prove myself. I'm driven, just like always, to prove that I can do anything I set myself to and do it at a high level. I just hope wish that we wouldn't have to go through all these problems with the economy, but we aren't in Utopia.

I thought that this picture from Velonews was quite interesting. All teammates at one time or another at Postal. All with their own pasts and futures in the cycling world. Armstrong, trying to make a comeback, Landis is trying to make a comeback, Hamilton started his comeback last season and won a national title in the road race. This season could be pretty interesting for all 3. I'm looking at Landis to have the biggest impact simply because he has the most to prove.

I think we all agree that Lance has nothing to prove other than trying to spread his message. We all know he doesn't need the money.

Hamilton's future is kind of cloudy since the Rock Racing squad only has 6 months worth of financing, coming from Michael Ball himself, and the team seems week since a few of their stars were relegated to amateur status, a la Rahsaan Bahati, who is the national crit champion and won't be allowed to defend his title. I thinkg that is a horrible thing to happen to Rahsaan, expecially since he is enjoying some of the best results of his career and he has a chance to make an impact in bunch sprints and crits here in the US and abroad.

Landis is coming off of having his title stripped from him, I think he is innocent, and wants to come back and prove that he was clean and can win races. The first few days of the tour of cali have been a little tumultous for Floyd, but I think with the TT coming up he might suprise a few people.

Of course, I'm just stating opinions, but I'm glad to see all 3 of them back and I hope they are all successful.

Well since it is a new year I decided to make a new addition to the family. Meet CoCo, a 1 year old mini rex rabbit rescued from the Wisconsin humane society. These pictures are from the first day we got her, she's come a long way. Her first few days were kind of funny all she did was run around my apartment and smell stuff. She's a little more social now. I'll put up some more pictures later this week. She has the softest fur ever. Her breed is what the velvetine rabbit is based off her. Her fur feels like Velvet. Crazy. Happy New Year!

I just got done decorating the Christmas tree with Andrea. I know it is late, but we just decided today to get one and decorate. We're not really doing much for xmas because the weather this week is supposed to be snow, cold, more snow, and more cold. We've talked about going to NY and PA to visit some family and friends. Her family is up there and Josh Spencer is living in PA now, so I'd like to get together with him and hit up the slopes.

My SRAM Red was my xmas and bday present from Andrea, along with a chip-in of my own. I totally blew off shopping this year, but will send my siblings and parents some gifts next week. It actually kind of snuck up on me this year. I've been fairly busy at work and home so the time has just flied by.

I've been living here for 6 months and I do like it for the most part. This cold spell that we have been going through lately is certainly bringing me down. I'm not done with my off season. I've been off the bike for a couple of weeks and I feel pretty rested and relaxed so tomorrow I'll start training and lifting again. I think this next year will be better because my life will have settled down and my schedule will actually allow for me to ride and not just commute. I'm excited for what lies ahead. I'll post some pics of the tree and Andrea's new Toyota 4 Runner. It is pretty sweet.

Wisconsin 'Cross State Championship

Course was perfect for me. Fairly flat and open with not that many switchbacks, one section of barriers on the flat, and one on a short and gradual uphill run-up. I started in the back, but quickly passed people in the sand pit, which was a change for me. I don’t do that well riding through sand and when everyone was dismounting to run through I just picked a line and barreled right through. I was sitting top 10 after the road section and heading into the uphill run-up with 3 barriers. I chose the inside lane and hoped to cut in front of some people before I hit the barriers, since they are my weakness when an incline is involved. Needless to say that it was a bad choice by me. As soon as my right foot hit the ground and I took one step to run, I slipped and fell…hard. It wasn’t mud in the corner, well it was, but it was frozen. I got up quick and ran the barriers, but had shifted my bike during the fall so on the remount all my shit was messed up and I had to get off to fix it. I lost about 15 spots right then and there. Rest of the lap goes ok, but I’m trying to calm down and realize that there was some more time to make up what I lost. I got through the rest of the lap fine, and started passing people again. As soon as we get to the up hill section again I get cut off trying to take a wide line and am pushed to the inside. You can see where this is going. I hit the deck again, harder this time, and struggle to get up. At this point I wanted to quit because my hip and knee were killing me, along with my wrist and elbow. I have never crashed in a cross race, or any race for that matter before, and the fact that I was doing so well was an even bigger hit to me. As soon as I crested the hill after my second fall I knew I had lost way too much time to make it to the front, so I just started picking people off that were in front of me. I was chasing them like they were rabbits. The final 2 laps went by just fine, no crashes and nothing wrong. I’m not sure where I finished because I didn’t want to look. I just packed up the car and left. Anyway today I am hurting pretty badly and I have a huge raspberry and some big cuts on the back of my left thigh and hip, my wrist hurts just a little bit, but the left side of my neck is killing me. Anyway I’m going to go to Chicago on the weekend of my birthday and do a race there, which will be the last race of the year for me.

Alright, so lately has been pretty busy. I've been doing a lot of cross racing and training. Although the results don't show the training. Really I've been sucking lately and I'm not sure why. My should has been acting up during races, so this year I'll have to focus on getting my right shoulder stronger and hopefully that will help me out. It has killed me during races when I have to carry/push my bike. Other than that I've had a little back pain, but not much since I did a lot of core work this summer. I think that next road season should be pretty good for me. I think taking the year off and just racing cross hurt me for the season, but for next year it could pay off well since I hope to be in good shape early on in the year and maintain that through the fall.

In other news:
I'm changing teams for next year. I have raced for Midwest Cycling for the past 3 years and I still think our kits are some of the best around. I will make that announcement soon. No Bryan I am not going to ride for Team Kaos, just in case you thought I would do that. My loyalty for shops and pretty much overall, does lie with Jay Thomas and Midwest Cycling, and of course Trek.
